Dr. Robert Conway

Specializing in Child and Adolescent Mental Health

I specialize in the mental health of children and adolescents, exclusively working with patients between the ages of 4 and 17. One of the most fulfilling aspects of my job is the privilege of following patients as they transition into adulthood. The relationships I build with them and their families as they navigate this challenging phase of life are incredibly rewarding.

Understanding the Whole Patient

My approach begins with a deep understanding of the mental health challenges a patient is facing. I focus on identifying the reasons behind their concerns rather than simply labeling the issues. This approach allows me to understand how these challenges are impacting not only the patient but also their family and the people around them. It’s less about applying a label and more about how we can work together to address the root causes of these concerns.

Medication as a Tool, Not a Fix

I am able to prescribe medication to help manage symptoms, but I believe that medication alone is rarely the long-term solution for mental health disorders. For conditions such as ADHD or bipolar disorder, medication can be essential in managing symptoms and supporting a productive life, but it doesn't “fix” the underlying issues. Similarly, for temporary mental health imbalances like those caused by a specific event, medication may help in the short term, but therapy and consistent care are often key to lasting wellness.

The Importance of Therapy

While medication can be part of the treatment, regular therapy plays a critical role in the long-term success of treatment. I work closely with a network of therapists to ensure that every patient’s needs are met, as therapy helps to address the root causes of mental health concerns. This collaborative approach allows me to provide the best care for each patient’s unique circumstances.

Dr. Rob’s Sneakers

The Story Behind the Sneakers

My journey into pediatric mental health started during nursing school, when I was required to wear plain white sneakers with my scrubs. I bought a pair of Nike Air Force Ones, unaware that these sneakers would play a significant role in my work with children. At the time, I thought little about the shoes, but as I started my first job at a psychiatric residential treatment facility for kids, I quickly realized that these sneakers held a special place in the hearts of the kids I worked with.

Building Connection Through Casual Style

On my first day working with teenage boys, one of them shouted from the back of the room, "Dude! Nurse Rob’s wearing Forces!" and the whole room burst out laughing. It was then that I learned the power of my sneakers. Nike Air Force Ones were streetwear icons with serious credibility, and from that day forward, I became "cool" in their eyes, simply because of my choice of footwear.

Reducing Anxiety and Building Trust

My sneakers have become more than just a fashion choice; they are a tool I use to build trust with my patients. Whether I’m meeting a new patient for the first time or engaging with them during a challenging time, my Nike Forces help break the ice and ease anxiety. It’s important to me that my patients feel comfortable talking about tough subjects, and I’ve found that a joke about my shoes is often a perfect way to create that opening. My sneakers make me less intimidating, allowing us to transition into deeper conversations when the time is right.

A Personal Touch in a Professional Setting

While a white coat might create distance between me and my patients, my Nike Forces help bridge that gap. They may make me look a bit silly at times, but I’ve learned that they help make me more relatable and approachable. In the world of pediatric mental health, connection is everything, and sometimes a simple pair of sneakers can make all the difference.
